Overview
The war of the russian federation against Ukraine began in 2014, and since then MORIS has been a trusted legal partner to the Armed Forces, delivering over a decade of specialized expertise in military law
Deeply embedded in the defence sector, our team combines direct collaboration with military units and a profound commitment to supporting those who serve. As we say at MORIS, “You’re either in the army or working for the army”—we proudly do both.
For more than ten years, we have provided comprehensive pro bono legal support to the Azov Special Operations Brigade and its Patronage Service, the Third Separate Assault Brigade, the Khartiia Brigade, and other military formations.
What we do:
For servicemen, veterans and their families
- Social benefits and statuses: assisting with documentation and legal advice to obtain statuses such as combatant (UBD), a person with disabilities caused by the war.
- Injury-related matters: assisting with military medical commission processes, auditing injury documentation, and advising on compensation and reimbursements.
- Captivity and missing in action cases: assisting with documentation, legal counselling on tracing, and investigations, securing payments and statuses for families.
- Death: advising on documenting deaths, representing families in court to establish the fact of death, and advising on obtaining social benefits and statuses for family members.
For military units:
- Advising on contracts and ensuring adherence to legal and regulatory requirements
- Advising on procurement processes
- Dispute resolutions
- Providing legal advice on white-collar crime matters
- Assisting with internal investigations
- Safeguarding IP rights
- Аnti-corruption policies
- Providing expertise on compliance with international humanitarian law
Advocacy
- At MORIS we recognize the urgent need to establish a robust military justice system and we actively advocate for its development.
- We drafted amendments to regulations governing the status of families of fallen defenders, compensation for post-injury treatment, and statuses for individuals disabled due to participation in activities essential to ensuring Ukraine’s defence, safeguarding the security of its citizens, and protecting the state’s interests in response to the russian war against Ukraine.
Direct support for the front line
With the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022, MORIS team redirected all resources toward meeting the needs of the front lines and safeguarding the rights of military personnel. One of the key initiatives was contributing to the establishment of the #SaveUkraineNow (SUN) Coordination Center — a platform uniting the efforts of the military, non-profit organisations, and businesses to provide comprehensive support to Ukraine’s defense forces. Within SUN, our team provides expert legal assistance for the procurement, import, and delivery of critical military equipment.
Advising businesses on military law matters
Given significant changes to laws on mobilization and military accounting, MORIS provides consultations on:
- the application of Ukraine’s mobilization legislation;
- designating enterprises as critical for the economy and essential for maintaining public life during special periods;
- military accounting management (audit);
- reservation of conscripted employees;
- legislative regulation of matters related to military service.
MORIS continues to operate at the intersection of legal challenges and national defence, supporting Ukraine’s defenders and ensuring legal clarity during times of war.
